In 1995, I had a vision to open a women’s specialty swimwear boutique. Having moved to the Outer Banks of North Carolina and worked in the surf/swimwear industry, I realized that more-mature women did not have a place to shop for swimwear. Surf shops, carrying only junior sizes, dominated our beach. Yes, clothing shops had some missy and plus-sized swimwear, but none of them had much of a selection and/or did not have specialty styles/features such as cup-sized, post-mastectomy and maternity.
With a business degree and retail buying/management experience in New York City and on The Outer Banks, I decided to make my dream a reality. In 1996, I opened Shore-Fit Sunwear. In addition to its large selection of hard-to-find swimsuits, Shore-Fit has a wide assortment of cover-ups and accessories to complement them. Unlike most beach shops, Shore-Fit provides one-on-one attention in a comfy atmosphere. As we very well know, finding the perfect swimsuit can be anything but glamorous.
With the first couple years a success and my desire to expand the business, I started selling swimwear on the early internet. It was an extremely crazy and hectic time as orders started flowing in from everywhere. Now seventeen years later, Shore-Fit’s internet selling has run full circle. The large internet companies, retail chains, and manufacturers have gobbled up the market. We have recently discontinued our online store, but will be more than happy to take phone orders.
It’s time again to focus on the “bricks and mortar” Shore-Fit and provide the best selection of women’s swimwear and customer service to our visitors on The Outer Banks. Help us celebrate as we enter our twentieth year in business – Shop with me and my wonderful staff at the purple building with the sunflower fence for the personal service you deserve!
